Inside D. E. Shaw Research

We strive to support the personal and professional needs of our team members by offering generous benefits, opportunities for community engagement, and a variety of learning and development programs. Some of these offerings are outlined below.

Benefits, Leave, and Time Off

D. E. Shaw Research (DESRES) offers industry-leading benefits including comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance at minimal cost to employees; a competitive 401(k) match; and reimbursements for personal computers, smartphones, and home internet. We support new parents through generous paid leave, low-cost backup care, and well-appointed facilities for nursing mothers. We respect the need for a healthy work/life balance and offer a flexible out-of-office policy.

Through substantially subsidized gym memberships, regular fitness classes (e.g., yoga and Pilates) at our New York offices, ergonomics training and support, and other programs, DESRES team members have the resources to nurture healthy minds and bodies. Those who prefer to bike to work can participate in NYC's public bike share program, Citi Bike, at subsidized rates. We listen to the health and wellness needs of our team and frequently evaluate and expand our programs in these areas.

Professional Development

DESRES team members regularly attend and present their work at top professional conferences in their fields with the full financial support of the firm. We have additional opportunities to keep abreast of external research efforts through our Distinguished Seminar Series, which invites speakers from a range of disciplines to give research talks at our offices. We also offer a variety of internal programs, seminar series, and workshops that give employees the chance to develop their presentation, communication, and other professional skills. We value mentorship, and provide opportunities (both formal and informal) for DESRES team members to mentor and be mentored by one another.

DESRES provides ample opportunities for socializing and community-building. Our employee-organized affinity groups foster a sense of inclusion, encouraging interaction and relationship-building across the firm. We host regular lunches, happy hours, and other social events at our offices and elsewhere (including virtually, for the time being), and our well-stocked pantry is the site of frequent informal gatherings. Team members also enjoy our memberships to many of New York’s museums, including invitations to special events.

Many DESRES team members value the importance of broader community engagement and social impact programs, and the firm supports them in a variety of ways. We arrange volunteering opportunities for our employees with New York–based partner organizations, and offer a generous charitable gift match to support employees’ own charitable interests. We partner with a number of organizations that support STEM students and professionals from historically underrepresented backgrounds, including, among others, the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing; Summer Math and Science Honors (SMASH) Academy; National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE); Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS); Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS); and Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM). We also organize annual gatherings in our offices for undergraduate and graduate researchers in relevant scientific disciplines from across the US; participants join us for technical presentations and workshops, career development discussions, and networking with peers and members of our team.
