Computer Science and Applied Mathematics

Algorithms and Architectures Researchers

Serious candidates will have an exceptionally distinguished history of academic and/or industrial accomplishment in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, or a related area. Particularly relevant areas of expertise might include parallel computation, scientific computing, numerical analysis, optimization, the analysis of algorithms, and digital systems simulation—but specific knowledge of any of these areas is less critical than exceptional intellectual ability and a demonstrated track record of achievement.

Scientific Software Developers

Serious candidates will have an exceptionally distinguished history of academic and/or industrial accomplishment in scientific research programming and/or computational science. Particularly relevant areas of expertise might include parallel computation, scientific computing, molecular dynamics, and large-scale data management and analysis—but specific knowledge of any of these areas is less critical than exceptional intellectual ability and a demonstrated track record of achievement.

Systems Administrators

Successful hires will be responsible for our servers and cluster environments, including:

Ideal candidates will have extensive knowledge of multiple Linux/UNIX operating systems, large installation systems administration experience, strong programming and scripting ability, and excellent communication skills.

Systems Software Developers

Successful hires will work on operating systems, firmware design, development tools, diagnostics, and hardware simulation, as well as designing and parallelizing kernels, libraries, and applications. Ideal candidates will have a computer science or engineering degree, prior experience with non-trivial parallel or distributed systems software projects, deep knowledge of operating systems internals, strong C/C++ programming ability, and excellent verbal and written skills. Familiarity with device drivers, file systems, run-time systems, communication protocols, bootstrap code, and bringup of new hardware is a plus.

Early Career Scientists and Engineers

D. E. Shaw Research is seeking scientists and engineers with zero to five years of experience who have degrees in chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, engineering, and mathematics from top-tier universities. Serious consideration will be given to candidates with extraordinary records of achievement in the natural sciences and/or computer engineering, exceptional quantitative abilities, and superb communication skills. Successful candidates will work closely with a number of the world’s leading biologists, chemists, electrical engineers, and computer scientists, and will have the opportunity to make groundbreaking contributions within the fields of biology, chemistry, and  medicine.
